We are seeking a Principal Food Scientist for our Asian Food Facility to join our R&D team in Pasadena, TX!  In this role, you will be responsible for developing and supporting our Wrapped Foods portfolio, including frozen egg rolls, spring rolls, and dumplings. You will also have the great opportunity to participate in the start-up of a new Sioux Falls, SD plant, which will be the largest Asian Products manufacturing plant in North America once it is completed in 2027.

Responsibilities:

  • Applying scientific principles (chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and related disciplines) to study food processing, deterioration, and safety. Analyzing food content, explores new food sources, and researches methods to make processed foods safe, palatable, and nutritious. Using food science expertise to optimize processing, packaging, preservation, storage, and distribution.
  • Providing advanced technical solutions for production challenges related to ingredients, formulations, processing procedures, and specifications, ensuring continuous production while maintaining product quality and safety.
  • Developing and refining experimental formulas, processing procedures, and specifications for raw ingredients, subassemblies, and finished products to drive product innovation and renovation. Ensuring alignment with pricing targets, marketing objectives, food regulations, and operational feasibility.
  • Planning, organizing, and executing complex test runs to validate and refine experimental formulas and processing methods. Developing final specifications and ensures reproducibility for large-scale production.
  • Leading cross-functional teams to support the successful launch of product innovations, renovations, and ingredient, formula, specification, or process changes.
  • Evaluating ingredients and processing techniques to identify opportunities for product improvement, cost reduction, and commercialization.
  • Assessing, validating, and optimizing ingredient sourcing and processing methods, and creating and updating specifications for supplier optimization.
  • Documenting all work in accordance with established procedures and guidelines. Providing clear, timely oral and written communication, including project reports, to ensure transparency on project status, progress, challenges, solutions, timelines, and accountability.
  • Driving innovation by generating and developing new product ideas and platforms through ideation sessions, bench-top experimentation, and effective communication of concepts.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in Food Science, Meat Science, Cereal Science, Dairy Science, Food & Nutrition Studies, Biological Sciences, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and product development experience.
  • 8+ years of product development experience, with a strong background in food ingredients, food chemistry, food processing, and food functionality.
  • In-depth knowledge of frozen foods product development, from bench work to plant scale-up. Experience in developing and manufacturing frozen food products. Ability to lead bench-top test runs and plant trials in a collaborative and flexible environment.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, analyze information, and develop practical solutions.
  • Willingness and ability to taste and ingest all food products under development.
  • Familiarity with SAP-PLM and Genesis is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

The base salary range for this position is $104,625 to $174,375 annually with eligibility for a 15% annual incentive bonus that is based on organizational performance. The pay range represents the numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to education, skills, work experience, certifications, geography etc. As such, starting pay for the successful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.
